This winter has been a huge change of pace. I went from being a full time sponsored athlete to being a full time avalanche instructor and cat skiing guide.

Needless to say, while my new career path is AMAZING, i have fallen behind on much of my athlete life. So to anyone who reads this blog regularly, sorry for slacking.

But, that’s not what this post is about.

At the beginning of March Weston and I headed down to Moab with bikes skis and a sled. We headed out on an adventure to celebrate the fact that we had a few days off together. We found some snow (despite the fact that the sled had leaked gasoline all over my skis, which basically de-lamed them) which was shockingly good in the trees. We pushed into the alpine and found a mixed bag of wind buffed bullet proof, to wind deposited deepness, to sun effected mash potatoes.

Weston re-visited an old line, which proved to be a bit more dicey then we remembered and I was just happy to ski a fun line, camp in one of my favorite spots, and ride my bike on some slick rock.

The trip was the perfect way to welcome spring.
From Powder Mountain to Snowbasin, Park City, Big Cottonwood, to Little Cottonwood, Weston and I hit 6 resorts before any one resort opened. Using our legs and excitement of Winters return to fuel our days we were rewarded with many deep turns! We captured it all and edited into episode 1 of season two of The Life Unbound.

Over the past week we have toured most of the Park City ridge line, had some good turns up in Little Cottonwood and even sat on a chair for opening day at Alta.

Its been a killer week of skiing. Were hoping that it’s a sign of what’s to come.

The storm rolled in on Oct. 22 and by the 23rd there was 3 feet of snow in the Northern mountains of Ogden and Logan. It snowed hard and heavy up north, while the Central Wasatch sat tight and thirsty waiting, hoping for their taste of winter.

Weston and I, however could not wait till the storm made its way southward, we had to head north and see for ourselves.

We packed up the Tacoma with the dog, packs, and skis and headed to Powder Mountain.

We were not disappointed. It was deep and heavy which we knew would set up a nice base for the days to follow.

After a few laps including a final up Thunder Ridge we were beat and with more snow on the way knew we would have another big day of dragging our out of shape bodies up the skin track.

The next morning we awoke to a reported fresh foot of snow in the Northern mountains. We jumped in the car and head up, this time to meet our local knowledge and buddy at Snowbasin.

It was blue bird when we pulled into the lot. The fog and clouds had lifted to reveal the wintery landscape that had developed over the course of a couple days.

The skin up was long, breaking trail for the top majority of the 3,000ft vert proved relentless. But after several hours we made it to the top of the John Paul lift.

The pay off for such effort was huge! Deep, steep mid winter conditions shots that reinvigorated us to take several short laps until our bodies could not take any more and we had to call it for the day.

The alarm sounded at 6am for the 3rd day in a row. We pulled our worn bodies out of bed and suited up for another day at Snowbasin.

The skin track was in and made for a quick ascent, so much so that we decided to go to the top of the tram and get a few extra turns. The snow had packed down a bit, creating a nice base while the top 10 inches or so recrystallized in the cold over night air. The over all effect, incredible supported turns with blower pow on top.

We filmed, made a few small laps up high and finally conceited to our exhaustion and headed down for the day.

The next morning there was no alarm, the warm temps and continued sun had done its job to pack down our powder to a point that no longer made the 3,000 ft ascent seem worth it. We rested, looked at the photos and video and each other in disbelief as to what we just got to experience.

one of the many perk of being involved with making your own web series is that you have all of the previous seasons footage at your disposal to play over and over in hopes of quenching that unwavering thirst. If you get truly desperate you can begin re-editing old footage, creating the ultimate in powder fantasies. And that is just what I’ve done with The Life Unbound’s Highlight edit.
